DVD Resell Rights - Common Types

When you purchase DVD resell rights, you are are actually entering into a licensing arrangement. And like any other form of contract, licenses can be structured in different ways.

There are four types of DVD resell licenses commonly available:

  1. Non-Exclusive Resell Rights

These rights give the licensee the right to sell the DVD to their customers . . . but not to sell resell rights to the DVD. Non-exclusive means that more than one licensee will be licensed to sell the product.

This is the type of license we offer for our DVD. We refer to this as our Standard Resell Rights package.

  2. Exclusive Resell Rights

At first glance, this type of license would appear to give the holder exclusive rights to sell the product. But in many cases, you'll find that the product developer retains the right to sell the DVD as well.

Even so, this is a fairly restrictive license from the developer's point of view, and therefore will normally command a large premium.

  3. Non-Exclusive Master Rights

Master rights is the term commonly used to describe a license that grants the holder the right to sell resell rights for the DVD.

Of course, the licensee also has the right to sell the product to end customers as well (ie as with standard resell rights). And again, the non-exclusive nature of these rights means that others may also hold the same rights.

Master rights will be considerably more expensive than standard resell rights as the returns available will be a multiple of the price of standard resell licenses.

Non-exclusive master resell rights for our DVD are available on request.

  4. Exclusive Master Rights

Unlike the situation with exclusive standard resell rights, a product developer who sells exclusive master rights to his/her DVD will generally be giving up all revenue rights (but not the copyright).

The person or entity who holds exclusive master rights can begin selling end user copies and resell rights secure in the knowledge that there will by no other licensees. As you would expect, exclusive master rights are always the most expensive type of license you can buy.
